Governance and Ownership of e-Stewards

The e-Stewards® program is an initiative of the Basel Action Network (BAN). BAN is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization incorporated under the laws of the State of Washington in 2009 (prior to 2009, BAN operated under fiscal sponsorship).

BAN’s mission is to champion global environmental health and justice by ending toxic trade, catalyzing a toxics-free future, and campaigning for everyone’s right to a clean environment. Within that mission, e-Stewards addresses the urgent challenge of electronic waste (e-waste)—the fastest-growing waste stream globally. Through rigorous standards, accredited certification, and ongoing performance verification, the e-Stewards program ensures electronics are recycled and refurbished responsibly, protecting both people and the planet.

Governance of the program reflects BAN’s nonprofit accountability and e-Stewards’ multi-stakeholder nature:

  • Oversight of BAN is provided by its Board of Directors, a diverse group of leaders committed to advancing the organization’s mission.

  • The e-Stewards Leadership Council, comprised of representatives from industry, NGOs, government, and other key stakeholders, guides the direction and evolution of the e-Stewards Standard and program activities.

Together, this governance structure ensures the e-Stewards program operates with integrity, transparency, and broad stakeholder input.
